The second team kicked off their season as a newly promoted team in the OKA 1st division last Sunday. There were a few of the players who already played a hard game of korfball with the first team, so we took a while to get into the swing of things. The Oxford side was proving to be strong in defence, collecting many shots and turning the ball over.
At half time, the score stood at 8-3 to Oxford City 2. Luckily we had plenty of wine gums and started the second half in a storming manner. After quick, successive goals from Jenny Ball, Kat Leak and James Hart, we went up 8-9 against the home team. The game remained close for the rest of the match, with only one or two goals at any time between the teams. Oxford came back strong in the last quarter and made use of a subs bench – a luxury our Spartan side lacked in this particular game (3 of our girls had already played for the firsts and there were no subs for them!). Oxford just snuck out in front and in the end won 14 -12.
A fantastic, positive start for the second team in Division 1, showing that they earned their promotion. MVP went to Kat Leak and Jenny Ball, both of whom kept the score board ticking over. Well done team!
